Review — Rising (Vincent and Eve #1) by Jessica Ruben

As the bus approaches my stop on the Lower East Side, I raise the hood of my black sweatshirt. Anonymity is key in my neighborhood—particularly as a lone female walking at night. All I want is to leave my crime-ridden shadow of a home in New York City. I’ve done everything I can to keep my head down and focus on my studies. College is my only goal; love has never been on the map…That is, until my sister brings me to an underground fight, where I meet a gorgeous and mysterious man: Vincent. He is the ghost in my shadows, showing up to feed me pieces of his upper-crust life, then evaporating into darkness until his next visit. I’m falling hard and fast. How can I trust him amidst the depth of his secrets? Vincent may be even more dangerous than the dark world I’m trying to escape.

I'm honestly speechless ! I LOVED Rising and now I crave death because I have to wait for the second book. It's gonna be unbearable of course but I'm not complaining because it's the best, nothing is better than a STRONG trilogy.

Wanting more of life even when everything seems made to discourage you is something I can totally relate to and I believe that Jessica really manage to capture this feeling well. Eve and Vincent are PERFECT together you can really feel their connection, my heart was racing every time they were together and from their first encounter. Eve is such a strong, inspiring heroine, she's EVERYTHING I'm looking for in a heroine. I adore this character ! Vincent was intriguing at first, he was an enigma and I was focused on finding out more about him. I started to fall in love with him, the more I discovered new layers of his personality, the more he gave Eve . These characters are complex and full of depth, everything felt real about them and their interactions.

This is the first book in a trilogy but don't let that stop you from starting this series. I think it's a really smart choice from the author because this book really build the characters in a way that  wouldn't have been possible with just one book. . It doesn't feel like one stretched out novel . The ending leaves you wanting more but in a good way, I didn't feel frustrated or thrown off by a gratuitous wtf moment.

I'm SO impressed with Jessica, I can't believe it's her first novel. It's such an edgy first book and I'm so happy that she took that risk. She choose to explore a side of New York that is rarely depicted in this genre and I can't wait to read book II. I'm so excited to read more from her, you can really tell that she put everything in this story, that she's passionate about Eve and Vincent. That's what I'm looking for when I read, I don't want to just read a romance novel, it has to mean something to the author and I think you can tell when that's the case.
Rising is one of the most refreshing reads of the year and at the same time I agree with people who say that it gives super old school new adult vibes!

If you enjoy a good love story but like your books with action and suspense then this series is definitely for you.

4.5 stars!
